Lesvos is a verdant, mountainous island with nearby Mount Olympus looming craggily over the traditional mountain villages. The mountain peaks are covered with snow in winter and the valleys and slopes are covered with pine, plane and walnut trees.
Agiassos, a spectacular 40 minute drive from Plomari, is one of the prettiest. The awe inspiring church in the central square is an important pilgrimage site and many Orthodox Christians visit from Greece and other countries. It is the centre of arts and crafts on the island, with a long history of ceramic and wooden artefact production.
On sweltering days, head for the cool of the mountains and explore ancient Paleochori (Old village) with its ancient buildings and charming narrow streets; Papadas with its stately mansions and Ampeliko with its magnificent central church and square with view over valleys and mountains down to the sea.
